February 28th Liverpool Collegiate 15 v 7 Lymm
A good morning of rugby hosted by Collegiate. No doubt Liverpool Collegiate deserved this victory, dominating territory and posession throughout. A curate’s egg of a performance from Lymm, some very good performances but poor application in some areas. The first half was all Collegiate, who ran in 2 tries, one of them a belter. Lymm struggled to adapt to some of the enforced positional changes, giving Collegiate virtually 100% of the ball in set and loose play. Lymm’s tackling was not up to their usual standard and rucking lacklustre. The second half was very different, Lymm having had a serious ‘discussion’ with their coaches at half time. Having said that, Collegiate ran in a third try at the beginning of the half on the back of sone woeful Lymm defence, 15 - 0. But then Lymm remembered which badge they had on their shirts and played with pride. All of a sudden Lymm got on top and dominated the game with Loughridge scoring a trademark forwards try, expertly converted by Downes. Huge performances followed with Diamond and Loughridge finally playing to their abilities. But the stars today were Mick Bellerby who put in a monstrous performance throughout and Tim Downes who decided to take on the entire Collegiate team himself! But Lymm left it too late and the final score was a fair reflection of this match. Collegiate are always a good side to play – you know you’ll get a tough fixture with no quarter given or taken. Their ref did a good job and the bacon butties were pretty decent!
After the Lord Mayor’s show last Sunday, Lymm came back down to earth with a just about ‘good enough’ performance this week. Sure there were a few changes, but that doesn’t excuse missed tackles and dropped passes, of which there were several today. However, you can only play as well as you’re allowed and Wilmslow put us under some pressure today and their excellent centre caused us a lot of problems. No doubt about the highlight today – a great try in the corner from Sam Coy. And a big welcome to debutants Will and Elliot. Dixon again put in a solid shift at 10 and Harris is maturing into a very good 8. Bad luck on Will Leach who again ended up in A&E after returning from his broken ankle – but this time I believe the prognosis on his shoulder is not too bad. Thanks to Wilmslow for being good opposition and excellent hosts.
